Know Your Limitations…

By admin • May 1st, 2008 • Category: MLM Training

“Know your limitations… then remove them.”  This thought runs counter to popular modern thinking.  Today’s thinking is all about “accommodating” limitations, not defying them!  But history’s truly successful people never asked for concessions, they took the world as it came and built empires from dreams that refused to be beaten down by “reality.”

The man to whom this quote is attributed knew a lot about limitations.  Born the youngest of 7 children in the mid 19th century he received no advantages from society.  He never had the benefit of a formal education.  Yet, by age 15 he was printing, publishing and selling a weekly newspaper.  He was stricken with scarlet fever as a child which caused a severe loss of hearing.  In later years he had no hearing in one ear and only 10% in the other.  Not one to bemoan the fact, he looked on his deafness as an advantage, saying he had more time to think and less reason for “small talk.”

He was always coming up with “great ideas” and “discoveries” but most of them never caught on with consumers.  Despite one closed door after another, he never let failure dampen his enthusiasm to try “one more idea.”  His enthusiasm for new ideas eventually paid off, for you and me anyway.  Thanks to Thomas Edison inventions like the phonograph, telephone, radio and electric lamps became commercially viable.

Edison once said of himself, “My principal business is giving commercial value to the brilliant but misdirected ideas of others… I am sometimes correctly described as more of a sponge than an inventor…”  Well, we can see that Edison may have had his head in the clouds, but his feet were solidly on the ground!

Successful people don’t let “reality” get in the way of their dreams.  It’s that simple.  To succeed in your business you must try again and again.  And again and again.  Ignore folks who tell you to “get a real job.”  Go ahead and get excited about any and every idea that catches your fancy.  While the first 50 tries may have dismal results, the 51st effort might be the one that lifts you above the crowd and makes you an outstanding success!
